Microbiology & Immunology, PHD

Through the Ph.D. in Microbiology & Immunology, students learn the dynamics of the host/parasite relationship, including the host defense systems, and the relationship of microorganisms to diseases. Upon graduation, students have a firm foundation in methods, tools, and techniques for a career in research as well as mentorship from Georgetown University faculty who are leading experts in the field.

The program is customized to the student’s interests. Upon entering the program, students will meet with their advisors to plan their coursework and select laboratories for research rotations.

This program is offered through Biomedical Graduate Education (BGE) at Georgetown University School of Medicine.

Students are required to complete 34 credits, in which 26 credits of required courses and 8 credits of electives.  

Comprehensive exams are completed in the fall semester of the second year of the program.

By the end of the second year, students are engaged in full-time research. Second year and onward students are required to present their research in our department seminars (MICB 6853) every Spring semester of their attendance. Upon completion of the research project, a thesis is written and defended.

In order to maintain the required full-time status, PhD students who have completed their coursework but have not yet taken their comprehensive exams must register for MICB 9999 Section 01.  Students with at least one, but less than 9 credits of coursework, must register for MICB 9999 Section 03.
