The Ph.D. program in Economics is designed for students who seek research careers at the forefront of economic science. The program provides an excellent training environment for future scholars and is ideally situated for students wishing to specialize in pure science and those who wish to study policy informed by science.
Academic Policies
The academic and procedures of the Economics program are those specified in Georgetown University’s Bulletin and the Economics Department handbook.
Program Requirements
Students must complete 54 credits of coursework, along the successful completion of comprehensive exams and the defense of a doctoral dissertation.
Incoming first year students are required to arrive three weeks before the start of the Fall semester to take an intensive mathematics refresher course. All students are required to take two semesters each of Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Econometrics, and one semester of Math for Economics. All remaining courses are electives taken within the Department of Economics.
Required Examinations
Prior to beginning the second year of study, students must take the Comprehensive Examination.
Thesis Requirements
All students must write and defend a dissertation in order to graduate.
