Eurasian, Russian & East European Studies, Undergraduate Certificate

Certificate programs mark secondary levels of concentration within the bachelor’s degree. They are strictly optional and are awarded only in conjunction with the undergraduate degree. Certificate programs should be viewed as a means for focusing interests and structuring elective coursework. Interested students should discuss the certificate and its role within the general bachelor’s program with his or her advising dean.

Requirements

The certificate in Eurasian, Russian and East European Studies complements an ongoing degree program and is awarded upon successful completion of the following minimum requirements including 21 credits of coursework and language study as outlined below.

Core Certificate Requirements Include:

• Two politics/government courses
• Two history courses
• Two additional courses from two of the following disciplines: anthropology, sociology, culture/literature or economics

Completion of the three-credit interdisciplinary colloquium REES 4398.  Undergraduate students complete the colloquium in their final spring semester. The colloquium requirement includes completion of a research project.

To complete the certificate, students choose from a variety of courses, in consultation with the CERES Director of Academic Programs.

Language Study 

Completion of the certificate also includes a minimum of four semesters of intensive language study in a language for the region.  Students may also satisfy this requirement through proficiency or fluency in a language of the region.
