The graduate program in Biology introduces graduate students to diverse fields of biological science and provides them with expert guidance to excel in research. The department is invested in training students to become excellent scientists, researchers, science communicators, and instructors.
Academic Policies
Students must meet the minimum 3.0 GPA average and follow academic requirements as outlined in the Program Handbook.
Program Requirements
A total of 24 course credits are required to obtain the Master of Science degree. At least 16 of these credits must be obtained through the Georgetown Biology Department. Full-time students can expect to complete the degree requirements in one calendar year.
Required Examinations
The Comprehensive Examination for M.S. students includes creating a grant proposal relevant to the student’s research focus. Students must choose the faculty members to sit on their exam committee and to organize meetings to review their progress.
Students are required to orally present and defend their proposals to their committee prior to completing the M.S. degree. Specific details regarding the composition of the committee and proposal requirements can be found in the Department Handbook.
Thesis Requirements
All M.S. students must produce a thesis based upon original research. Once the thesis is completed, students will defend their thesis via a departmental seminar open to the campus community.
