The Democracy and Governance Program seeks to understand the foundations of democratic and responsive government and how policymakers can create and implement policies to achieve these objectives and prepares students for careers in democracy assistance, governance reform, politics, and international affairs.
Academic Policies
The academic policies and procedures of the Democracy and Governance program are those specified in Georgetown University’s Bulletin.
Program Requirements
Students must complete 34 credits and an oral comprehensive examination in order to successful complete the program. The distribution of credits is as follows:
- GOVT 5400
- GOVT 5640 or GOVT 5432
- GOVT 5453 or GOVT 5450
- One 3-credit course in History and Theories of Democracy and Democratization
- One 3-credit course in Democracy, Governance, and Institutions
- One 3-credit course in Democracy and Society
- One 3-credit course in Democracy, Governance, and Development Policy
- One 3-credit course in Regional Studies in Democracy
- Three 3-credit Electives
- One 1-credit skills course
Required Examinations
In the month prior to graduation, students must pass an oral Comprehensive Examination. This exam lasts 30-45 minutes and is administered by the program directors.
