The joint program in Arab Studies and Law enables students to build a foundation for a career in international law.
Academic Policies
Students in the joint program in Arab Studies and Law are expected to comply with the polices outlined in the program handbooks and the Graduate Bulletin.
Program Requirements
Students in the joint M.A./J.D. program satisfy credits for both degree program. Over the course of four years, students take a minimum 109 credits (79 J.D. credits and 30 M.A. credits). Six credits of J.D. coursework can count toward the M.A., and six credits of M.A. credit can count toward the J.D.
The curriculum is outlined as follows:
- 24 credits of Arab Studies coursework taken during the first or second years of the joint program
- 30 credits of the required first year law program taken during the first or second years of the joint program
- 19 credits in international law courses, including International Law I (3 credits), 4 credits in further international law courses, and 12 credits in international law-related courses which complement the student’s area of concentration. These courses are taken in the third and fourth years.
- 30 credits in further law courses including a course in professional responsibility, the upper-class writing requirement, and 6 credits of experiential coursework.
- 6 credits of Arab Studies electives taken in the second, third, or fourth years.
Required Examinations
Arab Studies
Students must pass the program’s oral and written exams for Modern Standard Arabic by the end of their tenure in the program.
Additionally, students have the option of taking an oral comprehensive examination in lieu of a thesis. The exam is designed to provide a cross-disciplinary conclusion to the student’s coursework and total educational experience in the program. The exam is administered by a panel of three faculty members and takes place after the student as completed all course requirements.
Thesis Requirements
Arab Studies
Students may opt to write a master’s thesis I lieu of the oral comprehensive examination. The thesis is written in the final semester of theprogram. Students are required to take a methods course andenroll in the three-credit Thesis Colloquium. Both courses count as electives.
