The joint program in Eurasian, Russian and East European Studies and Law enables students to build a foundation for a career in international law.
Academic Policies
Students in the joint program in Eurasian, Russian, and East European studies and Law are expected to comply with the polices outlined in the program handbooks and with all Graduate Academic Regulations.
Program Requirements
Over the course of four years, students must complete a minimum of 109 academic credits as outlined below:
- 24 credits of Eurasian, Russian, and East European Studies coursework, including two advanced language courses, Introduction to Area Studies, and the Capstone Seminar
- 30 credits of the required first-year law program taken in the first or second years of the joint program
- 49 credits in further law courses during the third and fourth years
- 1 course in legal professional responsibility
- The J.D. upper-class writing requirement
- 6 credits of legal experiential coursework
- International Law I: Intro to International law
- 13 credits in further international law courses, of which 9 credits should complement the student’s area concentration
- 6 credits of elective Eurasian, Russian, and European Studies coursework taken in third and/or fourth years of study
Required Examinations
Eurasian, Russian, and East European Studies
Students are tested in reading and oral proficiency in a language of the region upon entry to the program and placed in the appropriate level of language classes. Completion of two courses at the advanced level is required for graduation, except for native speakers of a language of the region.
Georgetown offers Persian, Polish, Russian, Turkish and Ukrainian language courses that fulfill the advanced language study requirement (six credits). Other language study opportunities are available through the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area and through summer intensive language study programs in the US or abroad.
Thesis Requirements
Eurasian, Russian, and East European Studies
While students do not write a traditional thesis, they are required to complete a research project during the Capstone course taken at the end of the program.
