Program Overview

The Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) is an advanced management degree program offered by the McDonough School of Business. The curriculum integrates foundational business administration with the study of geopolitics, ethics, and business-government relations. The program is structured to accommodate full-time employment schedules for mid- to senior-level professionals.

Program Structure

  • Format and Duration: A 21-month hybrid academic program commencing annually in August.

  • Instructional Schedule: Cohorts meet for alternating in-person and online modules. In-person classes convene once per month on the Washington, D.C. campus (Friday through Sunday). Distance learning requires one synchronous online session per month (Saturday).

  • Residency Requirements: Students must complete five mandatory, week-long residential modules. These consist of three domestic residencies based in Washington, D.C., and two international residencies.

Curriculum and Customization

The 21-month sequence transitions from core business fundamentals to specialized and experiential learning:

  • Year One (Core Fundamentals): Initial coursework focuses on core analytical and managerial disciplines, including decision analytics, corporate finance, firm strategy, market analysis, global operations, and executive accounting.

  • Year Two (Advanced Integration): Advanced coursework covers macro-environment themes such as geopolitics, business-government relations, ethical frameworks, and new business ventures. Students select 10 elective courses to fulfill customization requirements.

  • Global Capstone Project: A culminating experiential requirement that integrates prior coursework through international field research and strategy implementation.

Core Curricular Domains

Coursework spans several core academic and practical categories:

  • Analytical Foundations: Decision analytics and accounting for executives.

  • Strategic and Market Operations: Corporate finance, global operations, marketing, and firm analysis.

  • Non-Market Factors: Geopolitics, corporate ethics, public policy, and business-government interactions.

Academic Policies

To maintain good academic standing and graduate, students must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.000 and earn failing grades in fewer than six credits of coursework.

The program reviews each student’s academic progress and performance after each academic term. Students experiencing academic difficulty should work with the program’s Academic Director to understand the applicable requirements, available resources, and steps needed to improve their performance.

Failure to meet the program’s academic standards may result in probation, suspension, or dismissal and may affect eligibility for program scholarships and financial aid. Students should consult the EMBA Student Handbook for complete academic standards and procedures.
