Approach and Purpose

Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business was founded in 1957 by the Rev. Joseph Sebes, S.J., a professor in the School of Foreign Service, who believed that an understanding of commercial markets was essential to worldwide political stability. The school was named for alumnus Robert Emmett McDonough, a major benefactor.

The McDonough School of Business is a premier business school dedicated to helping students develop a global mindset, bring a values-based approach to business, and academic excellence across a host of business areas.

Faculty members foster an environment for learning by selecting techniques that challenge students to take an active role in the education process. Faculty are extremely engaged, bringing their research into the classroom and involving students in their scholarly pursuits, as well as exposing them to practical aspects of the business world.

The McDonough School of Business Undergraduate Programs combines core requirements in business and liberal arts to provide students with a strong foundation in critical thinking and reasoning. During the first and second years, students complete courses in subjects such as English, philosophy, theology, history and economics, while beginning their business coursework and taking courses in accounting, marketing, finance, business statistics, operations, and ethics. In their junior and senior years, students complete coursework in their major. McDonough also strongly supports students who would like to choose a minor in one of liberal arts disciplines in the College of Arts & Sciences, School of Health, and Walsh School of Foreign Service. This blend of wide-ranging liberal studies and business courses creates opportunities for students to pursue diverse areas of interest.

McDonough also offers a variety of graduate programs across a range of experience levels, including the MBA, Executive MBA, Executive Masters in Leadership, M.S. in Management, M.S. in Finance, M.S. in Global Finance, M.S. in Business Analytics, M.S. in Environment and Sustainability Management (with the Earth Commons), M.S. in Global Real Assets, and M.A. in International Business and Policy (with the School of Foreign Service).

Undergraduate and graduate business students benefit from a dedicated McDonough Career Center team who provide individualized coaching across programs. McDonough students successfully find internships and jobs throughout the nation's capital, the United States, and around the world. Additionally, each program's advising team helps students map their career aspirations to courses and co-curricular activities to help meet their personal and professional goals.
