This didactic course provides foundational knowledge of human physiology and pathophysiology. Topics are covered from a molecular, cellular, tissue, organ, and system perspective, and related to disease states that are important to nursing practice. The focus of this course is to impart concepts of physiology and pathophysiology which are elemental to nursing practice, based on a comprehensive understanding of the patient’s underlying physiological and disease processes and their impact on the plan of care. Health Care Ethics for Leaders is the broadly applied study of mission, ethics, morals, and values, which influence the practice of health care. The course will examine the interdisciplinary aspects of professionals and leaders within healthcare organizations, including context of culture, equity, diversity, economic, and other organizational factors to the extent to which they have an impact, positive or negative, on health status. The course will build upon the self-evaluation of moral character and this influence on professional practice. Pertinent knowledge from the social and biological sciences is considered in the development of a plan of care and in evaluating national policies that impact childbearing and other health issues of women. The course concentrates on nursing care knowledge related to the following alterations and conditions: the respiratory and cardiovascular systems, the urinary system, the gastrointestinal tract, and neurosensory, musculoskeletal, and endocrine functions. Nursing care related to surgical and medical management of selected health conditions is addressed. Additional topics relevant to Care of Adults are considered, including and not limited to: preventive, therapeutic, and restorative conditions in adults, and health and healthcare implications associated with injury. This course provides the student with an overview of nursing care of the older adult, incorporating nationally recognized evidence-based best practices. The philosophical and theoretical principles of aging, common acute and chronic illnesses of the over 65 age group and their effects on the older adult, normal physiologic changes of aging, and common assessment findings of the older adult are explored. Assessment, planning and evaluation of nursing interventions aimed at preserving functional ability, promoting well-being and preventing disease will be evaluated. Issues unique to this vulnerable population will be identified, such as decision-making about end of life care and cultural considerations that influence the older adult. Physical, psychological, cognitive, educational, financial, and social determinants of health in this age group will be explored. Goals of Healthy People 2020 will be integrated into the care of the older adult, both well and frail older adults.

This seminar challenges students to analyze and reflect on professional leadership competencies related to vulnerability, advocacy and social justice. Students will explore the health and social issues impacting various marginalized populations through historical and systems-based perspectives. Analysis of public policies and determinants of health that perpetuate inequities will be explored with potential interventions proposed. Through application of an equity and values-based lens, students will develop skills in leading conversations related to identifying problems and solutions to complex problems facing disenfranchised patients and populations.
